Power in Partnership

“So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.”

1 Corinthians 3:7‭-‬9 NIV

I recently saw Elon Musk’s Starlink train of satellites in the sky on a clear night. The sight looked like something out of this world, and it literally was. This string of lights moved steadily among the stars and I couldn’t help but think how we have reached new heights as humankind. Sadly, it is easy to ignore the omnipotence of God in the world we currently live in. Human beings have advanced technology so quickly in the past two decades alone. We have smartwatches, AI, and augmented reality devices. We have cars that drive themselves and optional space flight for pleasure.  And while humans can invent, develop, and advance, it is God who is the creator of all things. We are meant to work in partnership with the One who is all powerful. Pride is spoken about many times in the bible but you can see how easily pride can enter the heart in today’s self-sufficient and self-achieving world.

Being humble means that we know that it is only God who does make things grow, but he wants to work through us while on this earth. We are his humble instruments but he orchestrates the beautiful song we are meant to sing. One habit of humility that I have been trying to practice is the saying of “grace” before a meal. Taking the time to pause and say a prayer of thanks for God’s provision centers me and causes me to acknowledge that without God, I would be and have nothing. While we can see all of humankind’s creations around us, we also see the chaos. Our Creator is one who wants to care for us and work through us. We can honor Him by humbly offering Him our gifts and talents. And the exciting thing is that when we work with God, anything is possible! We know He will one day restore order and reveal an eternity that will far surpass anything an Elon Musk could create. So for now, our work is with Him and for His glory.
