Meditate on Mercies

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, Psalms 107:1‭-‬2 NIV

Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord. Psalms 107:43 NIV

Have you ever seen the statue “The Thinker“? If you haven’t, it is a large bronze statue that depicts, “Dante, author of the Divine Comedy…leaning forward to observe the circles of Hell, while meditating on his work…a damned soul…determined to transcend his suffering through poetry.”

The psalmist writes, “let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story”, and then goes on to share in Psalm 107:4-42 examples of redemptive stories. Yet, it is the, “one who is wise” who thinks about “these things and ponders the loving deeds of the Lord.” (Psalms 107:43 NIV) Do I spend enough time thinking about God’s goodness so I share how revolutionary His redemptive love was, is, and continues to be? I don’t think we can ever think too much about the price of heaven. When we think, are we thinking about how blessed we are or about what is bothering or burdening our hearts? Is our story one of sharing the problems of the day or the promises we have in our always good God? Are we more consumed with thinking thoughts about momentary troubles or are we mindful of the mercy we have received and continue to miraculously experience?

The Thinker is stuck in time thinking about his own inevitable, never ending suffering. But, we are not stuck there! God came to redeem and gave us our own unique redemptive story. When we are worried, let us be wise and take time to think about how our story could be very different. Let us ponder on God’s fulfilled promises, meditate on his magnificent mercies, and let our thoughts linger upon his loving deeds. Then, let us never stop sharing stories of God’s great goodness.
