Psalms 91:11-12 NIV
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

Matthew 26:53 NIV
Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

Exodus 23:20 NIV
“See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.

There have been times in my life that God has spoken to me but today was very different. I believe that God placed in my path a physical message I needed to read and take to heart. I was walking in the frigid winter air with my dog (who insists on walking in all kinds of weather). With towering snow banks all around, roads still caked in snow, salt, and sand, all I could see was blinding brightness with the sun reflecting off the stark white landscape. But as I turned a corner to come home, on a clear patch of road, I saw something purple. I didn’t know what it was but as I looked closer, it was a very pristine laminated bookmark with the words,

“I will send an angel ahead of you to protect you on your journey”

I stopped and picked it up, and I’m pretty sure my mouth was gaping open even in the frosty air. Having been dealing with a challenging health issue the past 9 months, I was feeling very low on faith. I was getting some answers but there were still mysteries. Multiple doctor appointments, referrals to specialists, and a doctor who told me there was nothing else they could do for me.  With each day, I was still struggling, sometimes with debilitating symptoms. I was clinging to God but also frustrated and needed to know He was right there with me, working things out.

How did that bookmark get there? How was it me who found it? How was the message something so pertinent to my life and my circumstances? It was God.

Not only was it God, but this message was confirmation that although we often don’t think of angels, our God still commands them. They are sent to protect and guard us, to give us messages, and to show us the way. There are things I definitely do not understand about angels, but I do know that I have been protected at times in my life when I should have come to harm.

This world seems like such a non-spiritual place sometimes that it almost seems unbelievable that angels are sent by the Creator of this world to be with us today. And by His authority, He can call upon them to shield his children and shepherd them to safety.

What a loving, amazing, and powerful God. Not only to show me this so needed message for my heart and soul, but to care for us so deeply, to protect us and help us in our times of need.

With life’s challenges, it is so easy to focus on the tangible turmoil and palpable problems affecting our days. But God gave me a promise today, something I can hold onto. Even though I may not see with my physical eyes, I know God has sent an angel to be with me. I am thankful for the protection, the peace that only God can provide, and for His unfolding plan in my life.
