Security in Sameness

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

‭‭James‬ ‭1:17‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

‭‭Revelation‬ ‭1:8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

We’ve all heard that phrase, “change is good”, but change is hard for us sometimes. When we are pushed out of a place of comfort and convenience, it is not always welcome. We want to go back to what is safe, expected, and sure. There is constant change in this world…new conflicts, changes in leadership, changes in people’s behaviors, moods, and emotions. Changes in the weather, changes that mean loss, heartache, and disappointment. Changes in employment, relationships, and health. It’s a lot to navigate and we need to know where to go for stability.

The God of all the ages from the beginning of time itself to the very present has not and will never change. ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭13:8‬ ‭NIV‬‬ says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” But what is the same? What characteristics are so unchanging? God is love. His love for us is never wavering and never fails. “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” ‭‭(1 John‬ ‭4:16‬ ‭NIV‬). And, God fulfills all His promises. There are thousands of promises in the Bible and our God keeps every single one. “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?”‭‭ (Numbers‬ ‭23:19‬ ‭NIV‬‬) He will never leave us, will hear and answer each prayer, will provide what we need when we seek Him…and so many more precious promises that we can cling to and know will be kept.

As we face change and the challenges it may bring, may we cling to the One whose sameness is our security, who holds out His constant steady hand that we can hold onto in a wavering world.
