Superior Safety

For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.

‭‭‭‭Psalms‬ ‭27:5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I teach a college success course and one lesson I cover is about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Right above Maslow’s foundational level of meeting physiological needs is the need for safety. Despite how you feel about Maslow’s theory, I don’t think anyone wants to feel unsafe. Yet, there are times where we feel like things are not entirely secure.

This verse in the Psalms acknowledges that trouble is all but guaranteed. That day of trouble is coming and, in fact, has come many times in my life. BUT, that trouble doesn’t mean that danger, harm, or insecurity will overtake you. The situations that may threaten our safety are no match for the security that God provides through the storms of life.

As I’m writing this, we are supposed to get torrential rains after dealing with a major snow storm. Flooding is inevitable and that means trouble. When waters rise and the winds howl in life, God will not only provide shelter when we seek Him, but set us high upon a rock. He will keep us safe and secure above the turmoil. There is no other place of superior safety than in the shelter of our Savior. And for every wave of worry, there is a cover and calm from the King of kings. May we seek His shelter and know we are more than safe in His loving arms.
