Bloom

Lilac in bloom – photo by Jill Rushbrook
Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Ephesians 5:1‭-‬2 NIV

Spring has its pleasures and delights

That awaken senses day and night

The smells of flowers in the air

The birds that chirp everywhere

The lilac hangs fragrant and sweet

It’s purple hue to the eye a treat

How did God make such a scent

From heaven it seems it was lent

But the lilac is here for only a bit

It’s like a candle that’s been lit

For a while you enjoy it’s lovely aroma

But its fragrance will last for only a moment

How like our lives that are oh so fleeting

What fragrance do I give to those I am meeting?

Do my interactions smell sour or sweet?

Do those around me feel the need to retreat?

Or do I exude love and the beauty of Christ?

Are my words the fragrance of heart warming spice?

The world we live in can be bitter and cruel

But do I exude the same as a rule?

As the lilac blooms and strongly emits

A beautiful fragrance like a candle lit

It will fade and expire in scent and beauty

And after all, it has done it’s duty…

To reflect our Creator who loves us so

To create such beauty and to show

His majesty in nature every day

His love that He gives us without delay

I pray that however long I may live

My life would be one that I daily give…

as an offering that I would gladly release…

a fragrance that only to God I would please

May others see me as a beautiful flower

Created to bloom in God’s purpose and power

To live out my days in kindness and love

With a fragrance so sweet, it could only come from above.
